2020 is now behind us. And, while it was an insane ride along the way, every major stock index ended the year positively:
While it may seem surprising that markets would do well given the backdrop of a pandemic and significant economic turmoil (I’ll be honest and admit I certainly didn’t expect to see green for a good chunk of this year), it’s actually not that uncommon to see stock market gains during recessionary years.
Overall, the Dow had a pretty average year. The S&P 500, Russell 2000, and Wilshire 5000 all had performance well above average. And, the Nasdaq, well, it had an amazingly good year (5th best since 1975)!
I’ve visualized each index below to better illustrate 2020 now that it too is part of the long history of the markets:
Now, if anyone has a crystal ball, just tell me how 2021 is going to end and I promise I’ll give you a cut of the profits!
