Yesterday, I wrote about a cryptocurrency investment experiment as a benchmark. This will actually be one of five portfolios I’ll be setting up on the first trading day of the new year. Each portfolio will have $1000 invested ($5000 total). Here are all five:
Ten Cryptocurrencies (“Wild Stuff”)
$1000 dollars spread evenly between ten cryptocurrencies. We will see just how crazy the performance of the underlying investments and total portfolio really is!
Assorted Bond Funds (“Safe Stuff”)
I’ve got a few bond funds I’m looking at putting together in a basket. It will probably be four or five funds so split $200 or $250 in each. This group should be painfully boring to track - but stable!
Ten Largest Stocks (“Big Stuff”)
Whatever the ten largest stocks by market capitalization are in the S&P 500 at the end of the year, I will invest $1000 into, equally-weighted.
Ten Random Stocks (“Random Stuff”)
We will put blindly throwing darts at a dartboard into practice! I will pick ten random stocks from the top one hundred largest S&P 500 constituents and put $100 in each.
Five Metals (“Shiny Stuff”)
I’m creating a basket of gold, silver, palladium, platinum, and copper (even if it’s not that shiny), to track this segment of the commodities market by putting $200 into each.
Bonus! Cash in a Savings Account
As another bonus portfolio, if you can even call it that, I’m going to keep $1000 in a dedicated savings account and track it’s growth through interest.
With these five portfolios (and cash), we will get direct first-hand experience tracking very different strategies covering different segments of the investing universe. It will definitely be a fun horse race to watch throughout the year and I think there is going to be a lot of interesting stuff to cover!
