In a sign of how strange the perception of time feels as the COVID crises lingers on, I was shocked to see that the last COVID update I did was three weeks ago! I could have sworn it was only last week that I was talking about encouraging signs that cases had potentially peaked in the United States. Well, I’m happy to say that since that post (however long or not long ago it may have felt), we have continued to see cases decline globally:
If you look at that trend and compare it to the U.S., it’s clear who drives the global shape of new cases:
Unlike the up-and-down volatility during the holiday season, which was largely a result of data reporting anomalies, the current decrease is supported by a continued decline in the overall positivity rate:
The downward trend is great to see but, to make an obvious reminder, it’s no guarantee that there won’t be another increase in the near future. However, one would hope that, as a larger portion of the U.S. population becomes vaccinated, the lower the likelihood that another wave will surge as quickly and as high as the one we just had:
Vaccines are a a powerful ally in the fight against the pandemic but billions around the world remain at risk. COVID-19 will hopefully continue diminishing in the U.S. but it will remain with us for a long time to come.
