Federal, State, and Local

One metric that has really surprised me is the number of employees in the federal government. Besides the spikes for census years, the number of workers has been amazingly flat over the last forty years:

That flat pool of workers when compared against the broader population of employees means that the federal government has been shrinking in relative terms:

Though, the government is not just federal employees but also state employees:

And local employees:

Since those two government segments have been growing, when we look at the government as an employer of the overall national workforce, it has been fairly consistent over time:
