How much does the average person have in debt?
Dollar amounts for the 1%, 10%, 40% and 50%
We got into dollar figures for the asset-side of wealth yesterday, so today we can look at the debt side which, for most households, is primarily consumer debt (like credit cards) and home mortgages:
There was a big deleveraging of household finances after the Financial Crisis. However, that wasn’t true for every wealth bucket, like the 1%:
The 90th to 99th percentile looks a bit strange as well, with a big increase in debt lately:
The next 50th to 90th percentile is a lot smoother:
And, so is the bottom 50%:
Now that we have both the asset side and the liability side, we can look at the true net worth for each wealth bucket in tomorrow’s post!
