The basic materials sector was the ninth biggest sector in the stock market at the end of 2021. It’s small enough that not even a single underlying industry within the sector is over a trillion in market cap:
For the top industry, I think the funniest thing about this is that for a second I thought the top stock Linde was the chocolate company Lindt. I guess that’s specialty chocolates and not specialty chemicals though:
One tough part about being in some of these industries is that a lot of these names have pretty negative profiles when it comes to sustainability reputations:
Next you have gold mining, which could probably 10x in market cap if these companies mined Bitcoin instead (sigh…):
Next you have the really really bad reputations with chemical companies:
And then classic steel production:
So, there you have 25 new stocks to potentially consider if you are looking for some exposure to this sector!
