Plans for 2022
Some thoughts
Now that I’ve wrapped up things I was happy about in 2021 and things I was not so happy about, it’s time to think about next year!
If there was one theme from the two things I was unhappy about, it was the fact that I had committed to something publicly and then had to pivot away when I realized it wasn’t working as intended. To avoid that next year, I’m committing next year to nothing. Ah, that’s a relief.
But, if I was committing to some things…what would they be?
More focus on individual stocks
I’ve found that when I mention certain tickers in my analysis that I tend to get more response. That makes sense. After all, one of the dominant themes in financial commentary is talking about popular stocks (e.g., Apple, Tesla).
But, rather than just talking about general fluffy stuff, I’d like to get more into deeper fundamental analysis. This is kind of in a similar approach to my investing posts but not necessarily from the perspective of “oh, you should invest in this stock.” Actually, I think if fundamental analysis is done right, by the end of a post a reader could be convinced on conclusions relevant to their own buy and sell decisions without ever even making an official recommendation.
A very very simple example of this was a recent post on outliers for valuation and profitability. I’m just stating facts there and visualizing what companies might have an advantage from that perspective. That’s helpful information for people to make investment advice on without going down some path of writing clickbait headlines like “five stocks you should buy right nowwwww!!!!!!”
Forward-looking estimates
I continue to build out tools to assess how things might develop on a future basis. I haven’t shown a lot of that though because, even with the best tools out there, future forecasts are almost always wrong.
If I know that forecasts will always be wrong, what’s the point? Well, if done properly they can be useful. An easy example for this is the wealth model I did recently where the forecast is based on a historical trend and deviations from that trend can be informative about what might come next and how that could happen.
Charts
For several months now, I’ve been doing five charts a day. I think that’s been a big positive on the newsletter and producing good quality volume of material. However, for a little while, I’m going to back off that strict guideline of five. I may do some posts with one chart or ten charts. I’m not sure. Like I said earlier, no expectations!
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed these general thoughts for the year. If you have some other specific things you’d like to see, feel free to drop me a note. This definitely won’t be my last time I change things up - I’ll be assessing the newsletter and moving towards better things throughout the year. Definitely looking forward to it.
