Jobs are probably one of the most covered topics in the financial world. Who’s got one? Who doesn’t? How many we gained or lost. You get the idea.
There are a bunch of popular job metrics, with the unemployment rate being, in my opinion, the main headline number. The reality of all these metrics is that they can be boiled down into a few basic inputs - population, employed, and how many people could be employed. Just take a look at this table, where five of the eight metrics are calculated just on those three things:
The point of all this is that while there are many different metrics that one might look at to assess the health of the labor market, it really just comes down to fundamentals - who’s working and who isn’t?
