Since I haven’t referred to the Cass Freight Index before in the newsletter, let me give some quick background. This index covers all domestic freight modes, a wide variety of industries, and a range of goods from basic input commodities to finished products. The index is anchored to January 1990, which assumes a value of one. And, here is what that index has looked like over time:
The parallel between the current recession and the Financial Crisis in 2008 is pretty clear. Shipments were doing historically well in 2018 and 2019 but a sharp downtrend hit leading into 2020. It’s bounced back for now but we want to see further recovery in the coming months or else this will give indication that the economy is heading in the wrong direction.
